Of the theatre, which had been built exploiting the slope of the hill, they remained at the beginning of last century part of the scenery and of the cavea, with the stairs between the quoins and the vomitoria. Today, because of the intense urbanization, they survive only isolated structures, which do not allow to perceive a total image of the building. They are arcades and, of the intermediate level, ruins of a staircase and part of a gallery, nowadays turned into a storehouse. It is still possible to walk along part of the inferior corridor, from which they branch off other radial galleries, then walled up. Characteristic of the theatre was the presence of a cuniculus which, from the thirteenth arcade of this corridor, crossing the hill reached the ancient via Herculea and then the port, from where according to Paoli they came to the spectators the ones of Baja, who, without even turning around the promontory, could pass through those navigable caves, which were in the opposite hill. The cuniculus, still existent and coverable, today ends directly in the sea. Drawn from "The Phlegraean Fields" an archaeological itinerary Marsilio Editori - page 261 |
