Punta Epitaffio is the limit of the famous via Herculanea, the legendary road run through by Hercules to hide the herd of oxen stolen to the monstrous Geryon. Its name derives from the disappeared epitaph, which the Viceroy Don Pedro of Aragon wanted to be positioned near the hothouses of Nero in order to extol through the marble the therapeutic virtues of these "natural sudatorii" at the foot of the curved line of the twelve hills, which stretch from here to the Castle of Baia.
Maiuri mentions the existence of a Temple dedicated to a Venus Lucrina which probably raised on the small promontory before the sea. The epitaph, which the Viceroy had exhibited, was a sort of guide-catalogue: for every sickness, the remedy was a fumarole or a spring.
In the XVII century, as you can see in the drawings and the engravings , four levels raised there where it is possible to see the ruins of the Epitaffio and where it runs the provincial road of Baia whose construction, in a more serious way than any other before, cost the archaeological patrimony dear.
In this huge palace, collapsed in the sea below the Epitaffio, some scholars recognized Nero's villa then better identified with Claudius' palace. Gianni RACE "Bacoli Baia Cuma Miseno: Storia e mito" |
