COLUMBARIUM:
"the burial-ground of Fusaro"
De Franciscis, as also Ruggiero, (both of them quoted by the Authors of Baiae et Misenum), talk about the existence of a Roman Sepulchre of imperial age, rising along the road which goes from the Saddle of Baia to Fusaro. It was possible to enter the monument, characterized by a square basement and surmounted with a circular tambour, thanks to a flight of eleven steps. Ruggiero, in his work About the excavations of antiquities in the dry land provinces of the ancient Reign of Naples from 1743 to 1768, describes its planimetries and features.
As Borriello and DAmbrosio observed "at present there are no traces" of these ruins. As a matter of fact, at the time the Phlegraean scholars were writing, no one knew about the existence of this Roman cemetery.
Then, in 1980, they arrived the young of the law 285 of the list of the Commune of Bacoli, devoted to the research and the study of the archaeological monuments of this zone. They discovered a new place, perfectly corresponding to the one described "as existent and no more findable" in the tract of the road which stretches from the Saddle of Baia to Fusaro.
We can notice that it is exactly the Roman tomb which existed before and then disappeared in heaps of dirt, stones and dry branches. The merit of this discovery is to be attributed to the young people of the Law 285 of the Commune of Bacoli, who worked in the space before the Gescal buildings in via Fusaro.
