Only some locks of hair were found during the excavation campaign in 1981-82 and these locks probably come from the head of Polyphemus. His statue was never recovered. This fact leads us to some hypotheses and reflections.

Before the birth of Monte Nuovo in 1538, for some years, the area which stretched from Lucrino to Baia suffered violent seismic events and it seems that the whole zone rose up over seven metres. If these news are real, it could also be hypothesized that the statue of Polyphemus, much higher than the others, emerged from the sea and (being those ones the years of the reconstruction) it was broken to obtain lime.

During the submarine work of archaeological excavation, it was found a slide which, according to the scholars, was not natural. According to the same scientists, thanks to the slide, the statue of Polyphemus was took away and maybe placed in another villa. Anyway it is to be considered that the statue represented the giant anthropophagous sat on a stone throne, so the majesty of the character added the one of the throne made everything look extraordinarily imposing. And then, why the other statues which were part of the iconographic program were not taken away too?
