[...] The Thermae, provided with hot steams, are healthier than any other artificially warmed bath, because Nature excels over human intelligence [...] Nothing is more sublime than the shores of Baia, where it is possible to enjoy the sweetest delights and to fulfil the incomparable gift of health. (VI century A.D. Cassiodoro, Variae, IX, 6, 6) The historian Tito Livio (59 B.C. - 17 A.D.) tells that the Roman consul Cornelius, passing through Baia, relieved the painful consequences of a fall from a horse just with these waters. The therapeutic virtues of the waters in the Roman Thermae of Baia, together with the marvellous panorama, contributed to attract to this beautiful bathing site the richest and the most famous personages of the ancient Rome. The plant of the Roman Thermae of Baia, nowadays situated inside the Archaeological Park of Baia, was asked to be built by Octavian Caesar Augustus, the first Roman emperor (27 B.C. - 14 A.D.). He charged the architect Sergio Orata to convoy the natural springs of warm water of the area in many canalizations which provided different rooms equipped for body care. Nowadays, because of the continuous bradyseismic phenomena, it is remained only the hilly part of the original Imperial Baia. Though the waters in the Roman Thermae of Baia have almost disappeared, there is still the grandiosity of the ancient buildings of the Archaeological Park of Baia which let us understand the richness and the magnificence of the ancient Baia. |
