The Cento Camerelle or Jails of Nero (these are the names of the buildings as they have been handed on by tradition) are actually complex waterworks belonging to Ortensio Ortalo's villa, which dates back to the Republican age and was certainly one of the most sumptuous of Baia. Today it is possible to visit the inferior floor of the Cento Camerelle; there are communicating cuniculi dug in the tuff and not completely explored yet with a flat and sloping covering, which today falls sheer to the sea.
Covered by a thick layer of cocciopesto, insulating and protective material, maybe they were used as a cistern. The upper level, about three metres lower than the present trampling floor, consists of a floor not in line with the one below and built in a different age. Datable to the I century A.D. the building, a cistern too as it shows the waterproofed covering, is internally divided by three lines of pillars. The roof with barrel vault has outside, on the top of it, a terrace of cocciopesto (mortar with potsherd). |
